The formulas only look at height and sex — not age, muscle mass or build. There is no single “right” weight; the healthy BMI range is the more realistic target.

There is no single answer to “how much should I weigh?”, so this calculator runs the four most widely used formulas side by side and gives their average. All of them depend on height and sex.

Treat the result as a rough guide rather than a target. Two people of the same height with different frames and muscle mass have different healthy weights, which is why the healthy BMI range is shown as well.

How to calculate Ideal weight

  1. Choose your sex.
  2. Enter your height in centimetres or inches.
  3. Compare the four formulas, their average and the healthy weight range.

Ideal weight formula

  • Devine: men 50 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 ft; women 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg
  • Robinson: men 52 kg + 1.9 kg; women 49 kg + 1.7 kg
  • Miller: men 56.2 kg + 1.41 kg; women 53.1 kg + 1.36 kg
  • Hamwi: men 48 kg + 2.7 kg; women 45.5 kg + 2.2 kg

Ideal weight example

For a man 175 cm tall, Devine gives 70.5 kg, Robinson 68.9 kg, Miller 68.8 kg and Hamwi 72 kg — an average of about 70 kg.

Ideal weight: common questions

Which formula is the most accurate?

None is clearly better. Devine is the one most used in medicine; the others were proposed as refinements. Looking at the average together with the healthy BMI range is the most sensible approach.

Does age change ideal weight?

The formulas ignore age. Muscle mass tends to fall with age, so the same weight means a different body composition later in life.

Why do results look odd for short people?

The formulas were developed for heights above 5 ft (152 cm). Below that, the healthy BMI range is the better guide.
