Volume Calculator

Choose a solid and enter its dimensions to get the volume, surface area and litres.

Results

Volume (cubic units)
24,000
Surface area (square units)
5,200
In litres, if you entered cm
24 L
In cubic metres, if you entered cm
0.024 m³

The result is in the cube of the unit you entered. 1 litre = 1,000 cm³; 1 m³ = 1,000 litres.

How many litres does a tank hold, how much fits in a box, how much water fills a pool? The answer is volume.

The calculator supports six solids and gives the surface area alongside the volume. If you enter centimetres it also shows the result in litres and cubic metres.

How to calculate Volume

  1. Choose the solid.
  2. Enter the dimensions, all in the same unit.
  3. Read the volume, the surface area and the equivalent in litres.

Volume formula

  • Rectangular box: length × width × height
  • Cylinder: π × r² × h
  • Sphere: 4 ÷ 3 × π × r³
  • Cone: π × r² × h ÷ 3

Volume example

A box 40 × 30 × 20 cm is 24,000 cm³, or 24 litres. A cylinder with radius 5 and height 10 has a volume of π × 25 × 10 = 785.4 cubic units.

Volume: common questions

How do I get litres?

Enter the dimensions in centimetres and divide the cm³ result by 1,000. One litre is 1,000 cm³.

How do I get cubic metres or cubic feet?

Enter the dimensions in metres or feet and the result is already in that cubic unit. 1 m³ is 1,000 litres.

What is surface area used for?

It is the area you would need to paint a tank, wrap a box or estimate heat loss.
