Raising to a power means multiplying a number by itself a set number of times: 2¹⁰ is ten 2s multiplied together, which is 1,024. Powers sit behind everything from compound interest to computer memory.
The exponent need not be a whole number. A negative exponent gives the reciprocal (2⁻³ = 1/8) and a fractional one gives a root (9^0.5 = √9 = 3). The calculator handles all of them.
How to calculate Exponents
- Enter the base (a).
- Enter the exponent (n); it can be negative or a decimal.
- Read aⁿ, the n-th root and the scientific notation.
Exponents formula
aⁿ = a × a × … × a (n times)a⁻ⁿ = 1 ÷ aⁿa^(1/n) = ⁿ√aaᵐ × aⁿ = aᵐ⁺ⁿ
Exponents example
2¹⁰ = 1,024. Its reciprocal 2⁻¹⁰ = 0.0009765625, and the square root of 2 is 2^0.5 = 1.4142136.
Exponents: common questions
What is a number to the power of zero?
Any number other than zero raised to the power of zero is 1.
How do negative bases work?
An even exponent gives a positive result and an odd one a negative result: (−2)⁴ = 16, (−2)³ = −8. A fractional exponent of a negative number may not be a real number.
What is scientific notation?
A way to write very large or very small numbers with a power of ten: 1,024 = 1.024 × 10³.
