- 1 GB in MB
Why does a 1 TB drive show up as 931 GB? Manufacturers count in powers of 1,000 (1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes) while operating systems often count in powers of 1,024.
This converter covers both: KB, MB, GB and TB are decimal units; KiB, MiB, GiB and TiB are binary. It also converts between bits, used for internet speeds, and bytes, used for file sizes.
How to calculate Data size conversion
- Enter the value you want to convert.
- Choose the units to convert from and to.
- Read the result and the same size in the other units.
Data size conversion formula
1 byte = 8 bits1 GB = 1,000 MB = 1,000,000,000 bytes1 GiB = 1,024 MiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes
Data size conversion example
1 GB is 1,000 MB, or 0.931 GiB in binary units. A 100 Mbit/s connection downloads at most 12.5 MB per second.
Data size conversion: common questions
How many MB are in a GB?
1,000 under the international standard. The unit Windows displays is really the GiB, which is 1,024 MiB.
Is Mbps the same as MB/s?
No. Mbps is megabits per second; divide by 8 for megabytes per second. A 100 Mbps line transfers 12.5 MB/s.
Why does my drive look smaller than advertised?
The maker counts 1 TB as 1,000,000,000,000 bytes; the operating system divides by 1,024 and shows 931 GiB. Nothing is missing — only the unit differs.
