American recipes, US weather forecasts and some thermometers use Fahrenheit. Temperature conversion differs from other units: multiplying by a factor is not enough, because the zero point shifts as well.

On the Celsius scale water freezes at 0 and boils at 100. On Fahrenheit those points are 32 and 212. Kelvin, used in science, starts at absolute zero (−273.15 °C).

How to calculate Temperature conversion

  1. Enter the temperature.
  2. Choose the units to convert from and to.
  3. Read the result and the value on the third scale.

Temperature conversion formula

  • °C = (°F − 32) × 5 ÷ 9
  • °F = °C × 9 ÷ 5 + 32
  • K = °C + 273.15

Temperature conversion example

100 °F is (100 − 32) × 5 ÷ 9 = 37.78 °C. An oven at 180 °C is 180 × 9 ÷ 5 + 32 = 356 °F.

Temperature conversion: common questions

Is there a quick way to convert in my head?

Roughly: subtract 30 from Fahrenheit and halve it. For 80 °F that gives 25 °C; the exact value is 26.7 °C.

What temperature counts as a fever?

Usually 38 °C or above, which is 100.4 °F.

Where do the two scales meet?

At −40. −40 °C and −40 °F are the same temperature.
