A product size in inches, a recipe in ounces, a speed in miles per hour — sooner or later you need to convert. This tool covers seven kinds of measurement on one screen: length, weight, temperature, area, volume, speed and data size.
Enter a value and pick two units; alongside the main answer you see the same value in every other unit. The factors come from the international definitions — an inch, for instance, is exactly 2.54 cm.
How to calculate Unit conversion
- Choose what you are converting: length, weight, temperature, area, volume, speed or data.
- Enter the value and choose the units to convert from and to.
- Read the result and the same value in the other units.
Unit conversion formula
Result = value × (factor of the source unit ÷ factor of the target unit)1 in = 2.54 cm · 1 mi = 1.609344 km · 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg°C = (°F − 32) × 5 ÷ 9
Unit conversion example
How many kilometres is 5 miles? 5 × 1.609344 = 8.04672 km. And 100 °F is (100 − 32) × 5 ÷ 9 = 37.78 °C.
Unit conversion: common questions
What is the difference between metric and imperial?
The metric system works in powers of ten (metre, kilogram, litre) and is used almost everywhere. The US, and partly the UK, still use inches, feet, miles, pounds and gallons.
Are US and UK gallons the same?
No. A US gallon is 3.785 litres and a UK (imperial) gallon is 4.546 litres. The volume converter lists both.
How precise are the results?
The factors are the official definitions and results are shown to eight significant digits — more than enough for everyday and professional use.
