Runners talk about pace rather than speed: how many minutes it takes to cover a kilometre or a mile. Finish 10 km in 50 minutes and your pace is 5:00 per km.
Knowing your pace makes training easier to plan — you can see what pace a goal time demands, or when you would finish a race at today’s pace.
How to calculate Running pace
- Enter the distance and choose kilometres or miles.
- Enter your time in hours, minutes and seconds.
- Read your pace, speed and finish times at the same pace.
Running pace formula
Pace (min/km) = time ÷ distanceSpeed (km/h) = 60 ÷ pace (min/km)Finish time = pace × race distance
Running pace example
Running 10 km in 50 minutes is a pace of 5:00 per km (8:03 per mile) and a speed of 12 km/h. At that pace a half marathon takes 1:45:29 and a marathon about 3:31.
Running pace: common questions
What is the difference between pace and speed?
They are inverses. Speed is distance per unit of time (km/h); pace is time per unit of distance (min/km).
Is the marathon prediction realistic?
It assumes you hold the same pace for 42 km. Most runners slow over long distances, so allow a few minutes when projecting from a shorter run.
What is a good pace for a beginner?
A pace at which you can still hold a conversation — usually 6:30–8:00 per km (10:30–13:00 per mile).
